On the 18th of February, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has decided a common response on the assessment of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The European Commission has asked the Board to make a contribution to the assessment process.
In its response, the Board has underlined the importance of the GDPR in order to protect and reinforce the fundamental right of data protection into the European Union.
The Personal Data Protection Federal Commissioner and Freedom of Information, the Professor Ulrich Kelber – my colleagues and I consider premature the large scale changes of the GDPR. Anyway, we see the need to implement updates in the practical actuation.
This is particularly true in the cooperation sector among supervisory authorities in cross border processes.
The differences into the administrative procedures shall not affect the efficiency of the GDPR application against those companies that have committed data breaches. Talking about the international traffic of data, the EDPB underlines the importance of the adequacy decisions of the European Commission.
It invites the Commission to revise the decisions on standard contractual clauses of the European Union on cross border data transfers from third countries.
The EDPB is an independent european agency which contributes into the implementation of the data protection legislation into the European Union. It is composed by representatives of national authorities and by the Data Protection Authority.
The Board meets every month and has a registered office in Bruxelles.
