The Data Inspectorate has received different complaints on the browser extension “Shinigami Eyes”, available on Chrome and Firefox. The Authority is sending a request of explanation to the developer.
The Norwegian Data Protection Authority is obliged to process personal data cases that receive from the data subjects in compliance with the privacy legislation.
On this basis, the Data Inspectorate has sent an explanation request to the developer of Shinigami Eyes.
The purpose of Shinigami Eyes seems to be that one to identity and mark people on social media in order that it seems clear to all the users of the browser extension if the people with who they are talking or of who they are reading about is considered pro or anti-transgender. It should be also possible for users of the browser extension to “report” people that think that shall be marked. The developer of Shinigami Eyes has published more detailed criteria for the reports on its website.
The requirement for a declaration
In the requirement for the declaration, the authority explain, among other things, questions on the juridical basis for the personal data processing, as well as on how personal interested of data subject are protected.
This is a matter of fact. This type of technology can be used by anyone and it is easy to use in order to tag online other groups. If a practice in which subjective assessment and the labelling of identified individuals shall spread out freely, it will have consequences for internet and for the free exchange of opinions. In other words, this means a form of auto-justice that the Authority has to investigate on.
It has also asked some questions in order to reveal if the extension of the browser process the so called “special categories of personal data”, in the form in which Shinigami Eyes aims to identify political behaviors of people and communicate them to an illimited group of individuals (who download the browser).
The expiring term for the responce is the 10th of August 2021.
