Hackers ask for a ransom of 1,3 million euros: the informatic system of the Brescia Municipality is paralyzed by a ransomware

Is to tilt the service of emails and the whole server’s operability into the Municipality of Brescia. How we can read in the same website of the Lombard public administration, due to the paralysis of the ransomware attack carried out on the 30th of March, and the request of a ransom to get back the unlocking key by the hackers and have back the availability of data is 26 Bitcoin, which means 1,3 million euros.

According to the local media, the ransomware that has affected the Brescia Municipality is DoppelPaymer, which is not unknown to the Italian PA, which is able to entry into the servers and block them by cryptographing the included files (the ransom is useful in order to get back the key in order to decrypt them).

Meanwhile the offices of the PA are trying to restart the digital machine of the municipality that has about 200.000 habitants, we are trying to understand how long does it takes for experts to restore the normality, because is not the website the only one which has been blocked but also the system which manages the tenders and contracts, the Archiweb for building practices, all the scholar and the cemetery system, the workstations of

Accountancy, Lodge, Registry and Local Police.

The reactivation of some essential services, including a “forklift” website to ensure communication with citizens, should take place within a few days, although internal sources dampen easy optimisms: without payment of the ransom, It will take months, even years to recover encrypted data from malware. The only alternative, for now, will be to rely on backups, hoping they are up to date enough.
