The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has reached an agreement with X (formerly Twitter) that the company will stop processing personal data from the public posts of users of the X application in the European Economic Area that the company worked from May 7 to August 1, 2024 in for the purpose of training the AI tool “Grok”. The agreement was made after the organization submitted the case to the country’s Supreme Court due to the pressing interests of individuals in the European Economic Area.
This is the first time a data protection authority has taken such action, but the case was brought before the court after extensive communication between the DPC and X about the training of the AI model. The suspension will last while the DPC examines, together with sister organizations in Europe, the extent to which the processing complies with the General Data Protection Regulation.
