CROATIAN SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: Celebrating European Data Protection Day: “What does artificial intelligence bring us?”

CROATIAN SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY: Celebrating European Data Protection Day: “What does artificial intelligence bring us?”

On the occasion of European Data Protection Day, January 28, 2025, the Personal Data Protection Agency is organizing the conference “What does artificial intelligence bring us?”. Registration is not possible, all places are filled!

The central theme of this year’s conference is the risks and benefits that come with the development and use of artificial intelligence, and the conference will bring together representatives of the academic community, public authorities and data protection experts from various sectors.

After the introductory speech by the Director of the Agency and Vice-President of the European Data Protection Board Zdravko Vukić , a panel discussion “What does artificial intelligence bring?” will be held, where the panelists – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Robert Kopal, Professor, Senior Research Associate, President of the Management Board, Effectus Polytechnic; Dr. Karlo Knežević, AI Team Leader, Sofascore; Stefan Martinić , LL.M. Harvard Law School, Martinić Law Firm; Lorena Barić , Executive Director, CroAI Association and Marko Đuričić , Legal Expert and Data Protection Officer, Visage Technologies, will discuss the advantages and challenges brought by the use and development of artificial intelligence. The panel will be moderated by Anamarija Mladinić , Head of the Sector for EU, International Cooperation and Legal Affairs from the Personal Data Protection Agency.

This multidisciplinary discussion will allow participants to exchange experiences, knowledge and perspectives on how artificial intelligence can improve various aspects of society, but also what risks it carries with it. The focus will be on human rights, data security, innovation and the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, which will encourage constructive debate and joint finding of solutions.

Namely, artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly present in our daily lives, and with it come significant challenges related to data protection. The right to the protection of personal data and privacy is inextricably linked to many other fundamental rights, such as the right to integrity and human dignity, the right to equality, the right to freedom of expression, the right to freedom of movement and security, the right to education and to a fair trial. Failure to respect the right to the protection of personal data can lead to violations of many other human rights, and even to fatal outcomes for individuals.

Processing of personal data in AI systems that is not in line with the General Data Protection Regulation can lead to, among other things, discrimination, biased decision-making to the detriment of individuals and identity theft. It is therefore important to ensure transparency and accountability in how data is used to protect individuals and preserve fundamental human rights in the digital age.

We are also using this year’s European Data Protection Day to introduce “Olivia” , a virtual tutor and assistant for GDPR compliance, thanks to whom entrepreneurs have the opportunity to learn their basic obligations, test their knowledge, and create basic documents with which they can prove compliance with personal data protection regulations.

Let us recall that in order to raise public awareness about the fundamental human right – the right to the protection of personal data and privacy, the Council of Europe, with the support of the European Commission, declared January 28th as European Data Protection Day in 2006, which is also known as Privacy Day worldwide.
