Cyprus is the eighth country that has ratified the Amending Protocol of the convention n. 108.
The convention of the European Data Protection Board on the automated personal data processing (Protocol n. 108) was signed in Strasburg in 1981 and it is the first international juridic instrument in the data protection field. There are more than 50 countries all over the world.
Cyprus is part of the Protocol n. 108 since the 1 of June 2020.
The aim of the Protocol n. 108 is guaranteed that each natural person respects its rights and its fundamental freedom, in particular its privacy, and the protection against the automated personal data processing.
The European Data Protection Board thought that it was necessary to modernise this juridical instrument. even if the basic principles included into the Protocol n. 108 have been tested during years.
The Protocol n. 108 modernization has a double aims: address the challenges posed by the use of new information and communication technologies and strengthen the effective implementation of the Protocol.
The entry into force of the modernised Protocol 108 is vital for the digital age and ratification by other member states should take place in the coming months.
Cyprus will apply the provisions of the Protocol provisionally until its entry into force. SOURCE: AUTORITA’ PER LA PROTEZIONE DEI DATI DI CIPRO
